Integrations

Discord

The Discord integration posts a message to a text channel in your Discord server whenever one of your feeds or bundles gets a new item. This page covers adding your server, choosing a channel, what gets posted, and fixing common problems.

Plus and Business plans: Discord isn't included in the Basic plan. See Plans and limits.

Adding your Discord server

  1. Select Integrations in the menu.
  2. On the Discord card, click Add.
  3. Discord opens and asks you to add the Feed Control bot to a server. Choose your server and approve. The bot asks only for permission to send messages. You need to be allowed to add apps to the server.
  4. You're brought back to the Integrations screen, where the server now appears under Your Integrations, named after the server.

Each integration is linked to the one server you chose. To post to channels in another server, click Add on the Discord card again and choose that server. Adding a server you've already connected leaves the existing integration as it is.

Choosing a channel

Connect the server to a feed or bundle to choose where messages go:

  1. Open the feed and go to its Alerts/Integrations tab, or open the bundle and go to its Integrations tab.
  2. Click Add Integration (or Add integration) and choose your Discord server.
  3. In the Connect Discord channel dialog, pick a channel from the list.
  4. Click Save.

You can't change the channel of an existing connection. To post to a different channel, delete the connection and add it again. Each feed or bundle can post to one channel per server.

Only your own server's channels

The channel list shows only the text channels in the server you chose when you added this integration. Other kinds of channel, such as voice channels and categories, aren't listed, and neither are channels in other servers, even if the Feed Control bot is a member of them too.

When you click Save, Feed Control checks with Discord that the channel is still a text channel in that server. If it isn't, or Discord can't be reached to check, the connection isn't saved and you see "Failed to connect Discord integration. Please try again."

If the list is empty, Feed Control couldn't load the channels from Discord, or the server has no text channels. Close the dialog and try again, and check that the Feed Control bot is still in your server.

What gets posted, and when

Each message contains the item's title, with its link on the next line. Discord messages don't have layout options.

Feed Control posts one message for each new item, on each connection, as soon as it has finished processing the item. Items aren't batched or combined into a digest: if a feed update brings in ten new items, the channel gets ten messages.

Nothing is posted for items your filters remove, for feeds in curation mode, for items that were already in the feed when you connected it, or while the integration or connection is switched off. See Integrations overview.

If Discord is limiting how many messages it accepts, or a message fails for another reason, Feed Control retries it automatically, up to three attempts in all.

Disconnecting

  • Stop one channel: on the feed or bundle, tick the Discord connection, click Actions, then Delete selected. Or, on the integration's page, tick the feed or bundle, click Actions, then Disconnect selected.
  • Pause without removing anything: choose Actions > Disable selected for a connection, or untick Active on the integration's page to pause every channel in that server. See Pausing deliveries.
  • Remove the server: on the Integrations screen, tick the integration, click Actions, then Delete selected. This removes all of its connections.

Deleting the integration doesn't remove the Feed Control bot from your server. To remove it, do so in Discord.

Common problems

Failed posts appear in the integration's Recent Deliveries, labelled with the kind of problem, and in the event log, with the HTTP status Discord returned and a hint about what to do.

Error What it means What to do
Not authorised (HTTP 403) The Feed Control bot can't post in this channel. Check that the bot is still in your server and allowed to send messages in that channel, including any channel-specific permissions.
Not found (HTTP 404) The channel no longer exists. Delete the connection and connect another channel.
Not authorised (HTTP 401) Feed Control's Discord bot isn't authorised. Contact support.
Rate limited (HTTP 429) Discord is limiting how many messages it accepts. Nothing: Feed Control retries automatically.
Missing setting (No Discord channel configured) The connection has no channel, which happens if it was made with Connect Feed or Connect Bundle on the integration's page. Delete the connection and add it from the feed or bundle, where you can choose a channel.

If saving a new connection shows "Failed to connect Discord integration. Please try again.", check that your plan has room for another connection (see Plan limits) and that the channel is in the integration's server.
